A home-services directory that covers ten states covers about six different weather years. The month a Minnesota house is most likely to need help is not the month a Florida house is, and the trade it needs is not the same trade. This page is the map: for each climate we cover, the dated season from the agency that publishes it, the work that season creates, and the reason a credential check matters more in that window than in any other.

Gulf and Atlantic coast: Florida, Texas, Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut
The National Hurricane Center publishes the window: the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the statistical peak on September 10 and the busiest stretch from mid-August to mid-October.
The trades this loads are roofing first, then water, power and drying. The check matters most here because two of the states we cover have written into law what they expect to happen after a declaration: in Florida, unlicensed contracting during the existence of a state of emergency declared by executive order of the Governor is a third-degree felony. Warm-climate freeze: Texas
Texas has the opposite problem to Minnesota and it is worse for the plumbing, because the pipes live in unconditioned space. At DFW the National Weather Service puts the normal first freeze at November 22 and the normal last freeze at March 12 on the 1991 to 2020 normals. Those are North Texas dates; every Texas city runs on its own.

Cold-climate winter: Minnesota
Minnesota's winter failure is not the same failure. The Minnesota Department of Commerce Home Energy Guide states the cause of the signature one in five words: the primary cause of ice dams is attic air leaks. Warm air escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof, the melt refreezes at the cold eaves, and the dam it forms sends water back under the shingles and into the ceilings below.

Pacific Northwest wet season: Washington and Oregon
The Northwest hazard is not one event, it is duration: months of rain against roofs, gutters, drainage and crawl spaces, and any leak that starts in October has until spring to work. The EPA's number is the one to hold on to - if wet or damp materials are dried 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill, in most cases mold will not grow - because in a wet-season climate the clock starts over with every storm. Southwest monsoon and heat: Arizona
The National Weather Service gives Arizona a dated season: the monsoon officially runs from June 15th to September 30th. Its Phoenix office describes the hazards, among them a dust storm that usually arrives suddenly in the form of an advancing wall of dust and debris which may be miles long and several thousand feet high, flash flooding, lightning, and thunderstorm wind gusts that almost always exceed 40 mph in the Southwest.

Wildfire and its aftermath: California
California's hazard has a second act that most people do not know about, and it runs through the plumbing. The EPA's factsheet on drinking water after wildfires records that VOC contamination has been observed primarily in areas that were damaged during the wildfire and experienced pressure loss in the water system, and that VOC contamination can be present without visible damage.
